DECARBON 2025: A Comprehensive Look at Decarbonising the Energy Sector

The Oil and Gas Decarbonisation Congress DECARBON 2025 convened industry leaders in Berlin, Germany on 10-11 February to address the critical challenges and opportunities in decarbonising the energy sector. Among the top companies supporting the Congress this year were Gold Sponsors: NEUMAN & ESSER Deutschland GmbH & Co KG, MIYAWAKI GmbH, I-care, XRG Technologies, Chromalox; Silver Sponsors: Environ Engineering, Siemens AG, Sulzer and Bronze Sponsors: Onis and Horiba. In collaboration with the Sponsors and Regional Partners: GASCADE Gastransport GmbH, Moeve Quimica, PCK Raffinerie GmbH, McDermott and the Technology Partner - BASF Process Catalysts, this international closed-door event provided a platform for key players across the whole Oil and Gas value chain to connect, collaborate, showcase innovations and forge new partnerships.
DECARBON 2025 Business Programme: Advancing a Greener Future for Oil and Gas
The pioneering edition of the Congress gathered more than 240 delegates from 128 leading companies. Participants engaged in discussions centered on the latest technologies, strategies and solutions for achieving a greener future in Oil and Gas operations.
What are the most significant challenges facing the Oil and Gas industry in its efforts to decarbonise, and what are the possible ways to overcome them? These were the main questions the answers to which the participants discussed during the Congress. DECARBON 2025 facilitated a productive atmosphere for networking and advancing the energy transition through panels, sessions and roundtable discussions focused on topics such as Net-Zero roadmaps, hydrogen's role in decarbonisation, Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS), predictive maintenance for emissions reduction and more.
“This decarbonisation congress is something that probably was missing. It brings the opportunity to gather actors from several industries and several sectors of the same industry to discuss, network and exchange ideas, which is very crucial at this point”, - George Daskalakis, Head of Technology Management at Motor Oil (Hellas) Corinth Refineries S.A.
The Debates: Economy VS Decarbonisaton
Within the event’s business programme, a brand new format - the Debates - was introduced. This session was particularly lively and dynamic, aimed at creating energetic discussion.
During the Debates "Economic Issues as a Contributor to Decarbonisation", the participants emphasised the critical need to transition away from a reliance on oil and petroleum products, taking into account the fact that these resources are non-renewable. This shift is not only considered to be financially advantageous, promising greater economic independence in the long run, but also carries significant benefits for future generations.
“We have the technologies to reach our decarbonisation goals, but we face quite a challenge in the commercial aspect. There’s a need to find a balance between investments and the technologies to make the industry more sustainable”, - Karthik Nithiyanandam, Head of Sales - Europe & North Africa (ENA) at Sulzer.
As an example of the operating and successful decarbonisation project, Ravenna CCS was talked about. A result of collaboration between Eni and Snam, Ravenna CCS is Italy's first carbon capture and storage hub, capturing and storing CO2 from a natural gas plant with over 90% efficiency. This pioneering facility uses existing infrastructure and renewable energy, positioning it as a leading solution for decarbonising hard-to-abate industries. The project underscores the importance of CCS for achieving climate goals and supporting industrial competitiveness.
“We had a very fruitful discussion that revolved around the role of the public sector, regulations and subsidies to help these new technologies develop as it happened for wind and solar a couple of years ago. I especially enjoyed the debates and the involvement of the audience. It was a frank and open discussion on the benefits and costs of decarbonisation”, - Francesco Peruzzi, Corporate Strategy at Snam SpA.
Where Decarbonisation Solutions Come to Life - The Focus Exhibition
DECARBON 2025 featured a dynamic Focus Exhibition showcasing the latest advancements in decarbonisation technologies from 34 top companies. Attendees explored cutting-edge solutions designed to drive emissions reduction and promote a cleaner future. Exhibitors presented innovations ranging from pumps and electrical equipment to software and predictive maintenance.
The Focus Exhibition provided a valuable opportunity for delegates to engage with leading technology providers, such as C Teleport B.V., HAPTICA Srl, SENSIA Solutions, Nova Rotors and learn about the latest tools for achieving net-zero and other goals.
A Night of Celebration: The DECARBON 2025 Gala Dinner
The DECARBON 2025 Gala Dinner provided attendees with an unforgettable evening of networking and celebration. Held in a distinctive and elegant Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche, the dinner offered a relaxed atmosphere complemented by fine dining and entertainment. Live music, the magician's performance and traditional BGS Lottery featuring desirable prizes contributed by sponsors and the organiser made the evening even more enjoyable and added to the festive atmosphere.
“It's a good mixture between enough decision-makers here and still the intimate atmosphere where you have good networking capabilities”, - Jens Wulff, Managing Director of Sales & Engineering at NEUMAN & ESSER Deutschland GmbH & Co KG.
The Gala Dinner fostered connections among participants, creating numerous opportunities for collaboration and proved to be a highlight of the first Congress day, strengthening relationships that were built.
B2B Connections Fuelling Decarbonisation
DECARBON 2025 provided attendees with extensive opportunities for productive networking. Throughout the event, participants actively engaged in discussions both within the formal programme and during dedicated networking breaks. Overall, the Congress facilitated more than 150 B2B meetings, fostering the exchange of ideas, and the dedicated VIP meeting room offered a comfortable environment for professionals to connect and share insights. These interactions are anticipated to generate valuable partnerships and drive innovation within the decarbonisation landscape. Many thanks to the VIP meeting room Sponsor - LiveEO.
“The variety of people at DECARBON brings the opportunity to find new ideas and get new contacts. At least with two or three people I met here I will definitely get further discussions when I’m back”, - Jean-Yves Lambert, VP Industrial Competitiveness at TotalEnergies Normandy Platform.
Even amidst the serious discussions, the DECARBON Congress offered moments of fun and excitement. Our Gold Sponsor, Miyawaki, and Silver Sponsor, Sulzer, contributed valuable gifts for a raffle among the sessions’ participants. Many thanks to the Sponsors and congratulations to the lucky winners!
